KTM UK's Hellewell Maintains Under-21 Lead at Dean Moor MX
Goldspeed ACU British Quad Championship - Round 4 - Dean Moor MX - July 24, 2011

James Hellewell - KTM 450 SX ATV

Just after returning from the United States racing the AMA ATV MX Nationals KTM UK's James Hellewell ripped up Dean Moor MX round 4

Whitehaven, England (7/27/2011) - Team KTM UK’s James Hellewell had his most challenging race meeting over the past three seasons at an incident filled Dean Moor Motocross Park at the weekend, the teen sensation returning to his Barnsley base as series leader in the British Under 21 Quad Championship despite two difficult motos to test his character at the 4th round of the series.

Promoted by the NETT Quad Racing club on Sunday the 24th of July at the picture perfect Cumbrian circuit with the Lake District as a backdrop, glorious sunshine and excellent track preparation in the run up to the event ensured that conditions for racing were ideal to provide the large gathering of spectators well entertained.

Struggling slightly in qualification to get a good set-up and clear flying lap on the demanding hard-pack circuit, Hellewell nevertheless securing an all important front row start in the twenty-nine strong field for the two planned twenty-five minute plus two-lap races.

James Hellewell currently holds down the points lead in under 21 class

As the gates dropped for the opening moto and the field charged out on the first of sixteen laps, Hellewell gated mid-pack from his disadvantaged pick on the run to the first corner but immediately set about getting to the front, overcoming the dusty conditions in the opening stint of the race to move up to 10th with five laps gone. With his confidence at a high after his success the previous weekend in the AMA ATV Motocross Nationals, taking two top ten overalls in the Pro Am Class, Hellewell continued to move his way through the pack and at half distance slotted in to 8th before making 7th his own on the next lap. Embroiled in a battle for position as the race progressed and running 8th as the last lap board came out, Hellewell made his move to regain 7th on the exit of the final corner only to get tangled with the other rider within yards of the finish line, Hellewell working furiously to separate the bikes while dropping valuable positions, managing to get underway and take the flag in 15th after a drama filled thirty minutes.

Quickly putting the disappointment of the opening moto behind him as they lined up for race two, Hellewell once again gated well from his starting position and headed out on the opening lap in 13th. Finding his rhythm in the opening laps as he adapted to the watered surface conditions, Hellewell began to make his way towards the pack and with less than a quarter of the race run was poised to move in to the top ten when disaster struck, a wheel hub shattering and bringing a premature ending to his days racing.

Clearly disappointed after a frustrating day, Hellewell said “it’s certainly one of those days that I’ll not forget in a hurry, but that’s racing I suppose and you have to take the rough with the smooth. I was really looking forward to this meeting as I love the circuit and was on a high after my results at Unadilla, but these things are sent to test you and someone once said that Championships are won on the bad days. Hindsight is a great thing and looking back on what happened at the end of the opening heat I should possibly have settled for finishing 8th rather than take any chances at this stage in the Championship, but I’ve learned from it, put it behind me and will move on to the next race. Despite such a difficult day I’m still leading the Under 21 class and am currently 7th in the overall standings with twenty-nine points to 2nd, but with three rounds to go and dropping the two worst scores there’s a lot of racing yet to do”.

Next race: Sunday 7th August, 2011 GOLDSPEED EMX Quad European Championship Rd 6, Kegums, Latvia
