United Kingdom
(8/4/2010) - Team
KTM UK continue to lead the 2010 GOLDSPEED ACU
British Quad Championship after round three of
the series at the spectacular Dean Moor Motocross
Park in Cumbria.
Promoted by the NETT Iveston & Satley MCC
at one of the most exciting venues on the racing
calendar, the meeting was not without it’s
share of drama for the team trio of Paul Winrow,
Jason Macbeth and James Hellewell, but despite
this all three riders put in yet another fantastic
performance to keep team mentor Richard Cole
smiling, Winrow maintaining his series lead
with a heroic final moto performance, Macbeth
taking the 3rd step on the podium to better
his Championship position to 4th, while teen
sensation Hellewell took his best ever moto
result with a closing heat 5th.
Heavy rain in the days before the event made
for somewhat tricky conditions in the early
stages of the meeting, but despite this and
with the hard work of the dedicated circuit
owners the surface quickly dried out as the
day progressed with the spectators treated to
a superb display of race-craft with some nail-biting
battles.

Paul Winrow had
a tough day at Dean Moor but was able
to finish 4th place overall after he
went 2-5-9 on the day
|
Eager to extend his advantage at the top of the
table, Winrow got his day off to a fantastic start
with 2nd in the opening heat and 5th in race two
despite struggling in the latter stages with bike
set-up, but a nasty final moto spill at the hands
of another rider while running 2nd removed any
chances of improving his lead, Winrow never-the-less
showing why he has a record-breaking ten Championship
titles with a scintillating performance on a damaged
bike as he fought through from 32nd to take 9th
at the chequered flag and 4th overall on the day.
“It’s been a tough day and I would
be lying if I said I wasn’t slightly disappointed”
said a battered and bruised Winrow afterwards,
“but what happened in the final moto I
had absolutely no control over and I’m
lucky to have walked away from it. The Team
KTM UK 505 SX pulls really well off the line
and I got great starts all day, and although
I struggled with bike set-up for the second
race I was happy to have had a 2nd and 5th after
two outings."

Paul Winrow has
accumulated 10 championship titles in
his career & is looking for another
in 2010
|
"In the final moto I was sitting 2nd after
two-laps with another rider just behind, but
as I exited one of the split corners at speed
having railed the outside line, he landed right
alongside me from the inside ski-jump and then
ran in to me, sending both my bike and I tumbling
off the track. It was a miracle that both of
us weren’t wiped out and at this level
you just don’t expect that sort of thing,
sometimes you need to draw the line between
aggressive and dangerous."
"The bike took the brunt of the damage
with bent bars and a bent steering stem, but
after dusting myself off I was able to work
my way back up from last to 9th and salvage
some points. I’ve only dropped two points
so the overall situation is still good, it’s
Leuchars in two-weeks but in the meantime I’ll
be focusing on extending my lead in the QRA
ACU British Quad Cross Championship this coming
weekend.”

Jason Macbeth's
8-2-3 finishes had him sitting in the
3rd spot on the podium at Dean Moor
|
For former British 250cc Champion Macbeth it was
yet another good day at the office as he made
it two visits to the overall podium from three
meetings, Macbeth’s 3rd step on the rostrum
boosting him to 4th in the series just three points
shy of 3rd. A problematic start to the opening
moto saw Macbeth forced to battle through from
mid-pack after getting a poor start, fighting
his way up the field in the difficult conditions
as far as 5th before a coming together while challenging
for position dropped him back to finish a respectable
8th.
An outstanding second race left Macbeth running
3rd around the first corner before grabbing
2nd on the following lap and comfortably holding
position to the chequered flag, Macbeth rounding
of his day with a dazzling display as he charged
through from 8th to take a well-deserved 3rd
after a hectic days racing.

Moor after an exciting day full of racing!

Speaking after the event, Macbeth commented
“It’s been fantastic to get on the
podium again, but I know that I could have done
better in the first heat with a better start.
I gated mid pack and left myself with a lot
of work to do with the track still very tricky
in places, but I was feeling really good and
managed to get up to 5th before getting tagged
by another rider. The last two heats were a
lot of fun to ride, I got a great start in the
middle moto and was able to get up to 2nd and
pull away, and in the final race I again had
to work my way through after gating just inside
the top ten, but with the Team KTM UK 505 SX
working so well I was able to get back up to
3rd at the flag."
"There are still four rounds remaining
and a lot of points up for grabs so I’m
feeling confident that I can continue to improve
my results and move further up the standings”.

As the youngest member of the team but showing
maturity beyond his years, eighteen year old Hellewell
once again delivered an awe inspiring performance
to finish 10th overall on the day and strengthen
his 2nd place in the Under 21 class. After a frustrating
opening heat where he was pushed off the track
and forced to retire while running 10th, Hellewell
quickly put the disappointment behind him to take
a superb 10th in the next race having fought through
from 18th around the first corner, but saving
the best for last he made the most of a top ten
start in the final moto to charge through to 5th
at the flag, his best finish to date and no mean
feat in just his 3rd year of competition at this
level.
A delighted Hellewell said “ today has
been absolutely brilliant, and although I was
obviously annoyed at not taking any points from
the first race after getting pushed of the track,
my result in the last heat has more than made
up for it."

"The KTM 505 SX is awesome to ride and everyone
at Team KTM UK did a fantastic job prepping the
bike, everything just clicked in to place today
and I felt really good and had a lot of fun. I’m
still 11th in the main series standings but have
now reduced the gap to 10th to four points, and
in the Under 21 class I’ve opened a ten
point lead over 3rd while reducing the leader’s
advantage from forty-four points to just nine.
I’m really looking forward to the double
header at Leuchars on the 14th and 15th of August
and will be aiming to break in to the top ten
in the series”.
