United Kingdom (5/12/2010) -
D3 DWT Motoworks KTM rider
Mark Watson got his 2010 British Championship
campaign of to a flying start at the weekend,
taking three race podiums and an overallmpodium,
narrowly missing out on 2nd overall on the second
day of the double header which kicked off the
2010 GOLDSPEED ACU British Quad Championship.
Promoted by Quad Racing Ireland at the picture
perfect Desertmartin Grand Prix Motocross circuit
on the outskirts of the, the two-day event on
Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th of May was
the setting for rounds 1 and 2 of the seven
round series, and with clear blue skies for
most of the weekend and a beautifully prepared
venue, the sandbased Porters Pit circuit provided
a challenge that tested the riders and machines
with some fierce battles throughout the weekend.

With Saturday’s action getting underway
it was clear that Watson was clearly one of
the quickest riders around the tough and demanding
circuit, taking a superb 3rd step on the podium
in heat two by a comfortable margin, but spills
in the opening and final motos of the day, while
running 3rd and 2nd respectively and two subsequent
9th place finishes robbed him of an overall
podium, Watson rounding out the day in a three-way
tie for 4th but awarded 6th on the final race
results.
As Sunday's race day dawned and the thirty-one
strong entry took to the full Grand Prix layout
for another three twenty-minute plus two-lap
motos, a re-energized and focused Watson signalled
his intentions in the opening moto, charging
through from mid-pack around the first corner
to 3rd in just six laps and holding this position
to the chequered flag. Moving in to the lead
on the second lap of heat two after a superb
start, Watson again showed that he is a definite
candidate for Championship honours as he battled
for twenty-five minutes at a frantic pace to
take the 2nd step, but for many his final moto
result was the most impressive performance of
the weekend.

Mark
Watson is now currently running in 4th
place in points after a 3rd overall at
the Desertmartin double-header |
Falling foul of a pile up on the deeply rutted
2nd corner which blocked his path, Watson broke
the timing beam for the first time in a lowly
23rd place having lost half a lap to the leaders,
but setting a blistering pace and with the D3
DWT Motoworks KTM handling perfectly in the
tough conditions he scythed his way through
the pack. Making up an amazing thirteen positions
on the next two laps and by half distance gaining
another five as he chased down the leaders,
Watson was quickly closing in the duo battling
for 3rd,but with time running out was forced
to settle for 5th and finishing a superb 3rd
overall on the day and tied on points with 2nd,
the result boosting him to 4th in the overall
Championship standings just one point adrift
of 3rd.

As the meeting drew to a close, Watson commented
“today has been fantastic and I’m
happy with my overall result from the two days,
but I do feel a little disappointed at not having
finished higher on Saturday. On looking back I
think that I was possibly pushing too hard in
places and that proved to be costly, especially
in the final heat on Saturday where the bike ended
up in a drainage ditch and I lost a lot of time
getting back on track, but I quickly put that
behind me and on Sunday everything just clicked
in to place. I felt really good on the bike all
day, the D3 DWT Motoworks KTM is working really
well and allowed me to easily cope with the track
conditions as they got rougher, and even though
it probably cost me an overall win in the last
moto, I had a lot of fun working through the pack
and am really happy with my speed and fitness.
There is still a long way to go in the series
and the most important thing was to score some
decent points, which I have achieved, so it’s
still all to play for and in the meantime I’ll
be focusing on getting on the podium this coming
weekend at the Italian leg of the European Quad
Championship.”
