Kegums, Latvia (8/18/2012)
- Holmes Racing’s Paul Holmes took the
long drive to Latvia for the final round of the
2012 MAXXIS European Quad Championship. The race
was held at the spectacular Zelta Zirgs GP circuit
thirty miles south-east of Riga. In front of thousands
of spectators that lined side of the track, Holmes
performed brilliantly to secure his 2nd position
in the 2012 Championship.
The challenging sandy venue, packed with huge
jumps where Holmes has dominated in previous
European Championships, taking 2 overall wins
in the past 3 years, was a great venue for the
final round. As Holmes entered the weekend he
had a comfortable lead over 3rd place and rode
smart in Qualification taking 4thplace, just
1.5 seconds behind 1st.
Race 1: Getting a good jump out of the gate
but boxed in on the first tight right corner,
Holmes exited the turn down in 8th place but
got straight to work making some exceptional
passes. Holmes battled through the pack and
mid-point in the race he was sat behind his
rival for 2nd place in the Championship, sand
specialist, Mike Van Grinsven. Holmes chose
not to take any chances and rode smart in order
to cross the line just one place behind him
in 3rd.
Race 2: Rounding the first corner in 4th place,
Holmes moved straight into 3rd through the first
section and again had Van Grinvsen in his sights.
Despite having a thrilling battle with local
rider Edgars Mengelis throughout the race for
the 3rd overall spot on the day, Holmes minimised
any mistakes and crossed the line in 3rd place.
The 3-3 scorecard of Holmes put him on the
podium once again for the overall standings
for the day in 3rd place. By carefully managing
the gap between himself and Van Grinsven all
day, Holmes secured his 2nd place overall position
in the Championship.
Holmes commented after the weekends action:
“Following my win at the British Championship
just last weekend, and getting on the podium
both races today feels great! I tried to ride
smart all weekend and on this track it’s
tricky as there are some huge jumps to catch
you out, but I managed to do it and come away
with another 2nd overall in the Championship.
I couldn’t have done it without my team,
family, friends and great supporting sponsors.
A huge shout out has to go to everyone who has
helped me this year and I’m really proud
to have another great result riding again under
my own awning as a privateer rider.”
