Taft, CA (1/24/2014) - Grant Mitchell put his GMR Racing’s Honda out front to take the win in the Open A class at the Honolulu Hills WORCS season opener in Taft, California.

In the Open A Class, Mitchell grabbed the Holeshot and held the lead from start to finish to claim the win on Saturday, and he recorded the fastest laptime of the race on the way with a time of 10:24 in the second lap.

“I grabbed the lead and rode my own race. Everything went really well. My Sparks engine was pulling awesome and my Maxxis Tires hooked up everywhere. It was a great way to start the season,” regarded Mitchell.

Mitchell’s impressive win on Saturday, had the 2013 defending WORCS Pro-Am Champion among the top qualifiers for the Pro-Am race on Sunday where Mitchell looks to defend his title against a stacked field of competitors for 2014.

Unfortunately, Grant Mitchell's lead was cut short as he was forced to pit due to a mechanical issue
Mitchell’s Maxxis tires and Sparks engine powered him off the line for the Pro-Am start, and it was nearly a three way tie for the holeshot with Mitchell quickly gaining control of the lead exiting turn one, but his lead would be short lived when he experienced and unexpected mechanical issue by the end of the first lap, which dropped him back to third place before he made an extended pit stop for repairs.

When Mitchell returned to the race, he had dropped back to last place and nearly eight minutes behind the class leader, but Mitchell pressed on determined to gain some valuable points, and by the checkered flag, Mitchell had charged his way into ninth place.

“It was not where I needed to be for Pro-Am, but at least I got a few valuable points for the championship. There’s always next round,” said Mitchell.
Mitchell plans to rebound and go for the Pro-Am win at round two of the WORCS series held on February 7-9th in Primm, Nevada.
