West Virginia (3/25/2009) - I felt
great traveling down to Morganton, NC on Friday.
The conditions looked like they were going to be
just about perfect and I had a huge level of confidence
in my machine and myself. I had quite a bit of time
to set the bike up for this weekend and it was working
flawlessly.
Custom Axis sent me a new set of their Pro Air shocks
over and I had raced them in a local race during
the off weekend. I was extremely impressed with
them and couldn’t wait to see how they would
do at a GNCC.
Saturday morning we all woke up to freezing weather.
The temperature gauge was reading 32 degrees at
race time. To say the least I wasn’t looking
forward to taking the plunge through the Steele
Creek!!
At the drop of the flag once again I didn’t
get a great start. I was close to the last of the
pack before entering the woods. I knew this was
going to be another day where I was going to have
to make my move quickly.
I soon found myself making up time fairly well.
By the time the 3rd lap rolled around I was in fourth
and had 3rd place in view. The Renegade was really
working well and I felt really good. Third place
was held by Sam Williams last years U2 champ and
a newly converted Can-am Renegade rider. I rode
behind him for a few miles waiting for an opportunity
to pass. I knew the creek was coming up and I knew
I could pull make a pass in the creek crossing.
We hit the creek about the same time but I was able
to pull off the pass. After the pass I put my head
down and was going to do my best to track down the
leaders.
Not too long after the creek my quad started handling
very strange. I felt like I couldn’t make
it do anything I wanted. It had tremendous body
roll and I definitely had my hands full.
I knew something was wrong but I knew if I would
stop I would sacrifice my positions. I just kept
going as best I could to finish the race. I ended
up dropping back to fourth and as upsetting as that
was there was just not much I could do about it.
Come to find out the front sway bar mount had broken
leaving it just dangling there. Causing the quad
to roll and be unstable. We had set the shocks up
to be very plush and rely on the sway bar for stability.
It was great while it worked!!
I am going to do my best to put Steele Creek behind
me and look forward to the BIG BUCK. Congratulations
to all the other X team riders this past weekend
especially Lexie Coulter for getting her first Overall
Podium of the year!
I'll see everyone in South Carolina, I hope it’s
a Mud Fest!
