Baldwin Motorsports' #20 Josh Upperman
takes the podium in second for Moto 1
Budds Creek |
North Kingsville, OH (4/19/2011)
- Round four of the 2011 AMA ATV
Motocross Championships proved to be the toughest
race of the season as it was also the first mud
race of the year, but Baldwin Motorsport’s
Josh Upperman prevailed and came out of it with
a top five finish.
The rain moved in on Saturday morning and drenched
the track, and even though the rain let up,
it left plenty of standing water and mud for
the first pro moto of the day. Racers knew a
good start would be crucial for this round and
Josh Upperman did just that in the first moto.
Upperman shot off the start in second behind
John Natalie. Upperman stayed close and began
to challenge Natalie for the lead after just
a couple of laps. Upperman battled with Natalie
for several laps before the muddy conditions
got to be too much and Upperman settled into
second, where he would stay until reaching the
checkered flag. “I made the best of it.
I had a good set up and that really helped.
I tried several times to take the lead from
John but it was pretty bad out there,”
Upperman stated.

Upperman was hoping for another good start
in moto two but things didn’t go according
to plan as he and Joel Hetrick got caught up
on the start, sending Upperman back to ninth
place. Upperman tried his best but the slick
and muddy conditions caused visibility issues
and only allowed him to reach the number eight
spot before crossing the finish line, giving
him fourth overall for the day.
