- The AMA Pro ATV and ITP Tires/Moose Racing National Motocross Championship returns for 2009, with only a few changes but a lot more excitement for everyone.

The Daytona Motorsports Group purchased the majority of AMA Pro Racing properties, including AMA Pro ATV in 2008. MX Sports has worked out a contract with DMG to run AMA Pro ATV. MX Sports will combine the Pro racers with the ATV MX Nationals, which is very similar to the way it has operated the last two years.

The AMA Pro ATV series will start at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California, just like last year. The Pros will then join the amateurs for the next 10 races of the ATV National Motocross Championship starting in Pell City, Alabama, March 21-22 and ending at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, August 15-16.

Like the last two years, there will be a Pro ATV Invitational, which will be held September 5 at Steele City Raceway in Delmont, Pennsylvania.

Meanwhile, the AMA Congress met in October to consider numerous issues affecting amateur ATV and motorcycle competition and riding. There were a number of proposed rule changes that failed, some were amended, and others were approved. The ones that were approved by Congress have also been approved by the AMA Board of Directors

On another topic, the AMA and the FIM (Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme) have been working on reducing sound, the single biggest threat to us continuing to be able to race, and have developed a test procedure that makes it easy to do sound testing at a track or in the field, very much like the current J-1287 test many of your are familiar with.

AMA Congress-approved proposal No. 70 establishes sound limits of 96 dB/A for two-stroke and 94 dB/A for four-stroke engines. These limits will go into effect 2011.

Proposal No. 1 applies to Pro riders who enter amateur events. They must comply with all amateur rules.

Proposal No. 28 applies to dirt track and TT racing. At the referee’s discretion, if a re-start is necessary the riders will be started in a staggered position rather than single file.

Proposal No.76 did away with riders in dirt track having the ability to change machines and start on the penalty line. This will no longer be allowed.

Proposal No. 72 added Team Hare Scrambles to the rules that allow for riders of different abilities (A,B,C) to compete on the same team and not effect their individual eligibility the following season.

Proposal No. 80 addressed ATV exhaust. New for 2009 an ATV exhaust must not extend past the upper frame rail or beyond the grab bar.

Proposal No. 81 applies to all youth classes. Racers can’t downsize the engine to meet a lower class limit.

Proposal No. 82 was prompted by a promoter who had an ATV show up with a nitrous oxide injection. In the future, ATVs may not have super chargers, turbo chargers or nitrous oxide injection.

Proposal No. 83 changed the cc limit in the 51 to 70cc Production class to 0-70cc. This will allow racers on 50cc ATVs to enter more than one class.

The new sound limits don’t go into affect until 2011, but switching to a quieter exhaust now will help keep your track or riding area open.
