ACU British Quad-X Championship - Round 6 - Dean Moor - September 2, 2012

DWT's Paul Holmes was crown the 2012 ACU British QuadCross Champion at Dean Moor Round 6

England (9/4/2012) - Paul Holmes held his nerve and put in an exhilarating performance to win the ACU British Quadcross Championship during Round Six at Dean Moor. Holmes was made to work for the two race wins as the under 21 class riders continued to make their mark on this year’s Championship. Hosted by Iveston and Satley MMC in conjunction with the NETT Quad Championship, the superb Dean Moor circuit provided perfect conditions in this penultimate round.

Qualifying started in muddy conditions with Dean Colhoun impressing as he took the fastest time. Connor Smith started race one by pulling a huge gap into the first corner, taking the holeshot and holding his position well during the first few laps. Right behind him was Colhoun who made an excellent start to the race. Championship leader Holmes was running in fourth place. Just before midway, Smith pulled up in despair as technical issues put an end to his promising lead. Colhoun took the lead with Holmes closing in.

The pair battled hard, Colhoun looking like he might just be able to hold off Holmes for the remaining few laps. However on the penultimate lap, Holmes got the better line as they passed a backmarker, going on to take the win with the fastest lap. Continuing on from his excellent recent form, Luke Cooper took a well deserved third just ahead of last week’s Pont De Vaux team mates Ricky Tordoff and Carl Bunce who battled hard right to the finish. David Cowan provided a solid performance to finish sixth.

With one more round to go and riders dropping points from two races, it looked likely that Holmes was going to be the 2012 champion but not wanting to take any chances, he made one of his best holeshots as race two got underway. Riders remained tightly packed round the first lap with Holmes leading ahead of Smith, Colhoun and Cowan. While Holmes and Connor battled at the front, Colhoun suffered technical problems which forced him to abandon the race. Cowan was out on his own in third with a chasing Cooper passing his way to fourth. Connor looked at stages like he might pass Holmes, pushing hard and taking the fastest lap in the process but Holmes couldn’t be beaten or caught up on points as he crossed the line to be crowned 2012 ACU British Quadcross Champion.

After jubilant celebrations Holmes commented: “I was looking for a mistake free race, get to the front and stay out of trouble. Once I had the holeshot I didn’t want to push. I’m feeling ecstatic right now after winning the British. It hasn’t always been an easy year with the big crash in the first round and all the travelling around in the European competition but it makes it so much more rewarding, particularly just being a family team.”

Under 21 Class
This year we have witnessed a surge of fresh talent with the new youth riders coming into the Championship. As recent results have shown, they are quickly establishing themselves as the riders to beat. Winning the under 21 class and finishing third overall was David Cowan with another impressive display. Luke Cooper rode smoothly in both races taking the same amount of points as Cowan but finishing in second place as Cowan took the better result in race two. Cooper also finished second overall in the main championship. George Calloway was also riding well as he took the third spot in the under 21 and fifth overall.

British Masters Class
The Masters Championship continues to be as hard fought as ever with the return of Lindsey Duke riding well after his bad off at FatCats. He took maximum points while Darran Bridge and Antony Barrett battled it out for second and third. Joint on 72 points each, Bridge edged it with a better result in race two.
