ACU Quadcross Paul Holmes
Wins Round 2 at Asham Woods
ACU
British Quad Championship
- Round 2 - Frome, England - June 4, 2012
Duns, Scotland (6/5/2012) - Frome,
England - Paul Holmes had plenty to celebrate
as he extended his Championship lead this Jubilee
Bank Holiday Monday with another overall win at
round two of the ACU British Quadcross Championships.
There was also a surprise result as 17 year old
Luke Cooper took victory in an action packed race
two. After a weekend of rain, the clouds dispersed
leaving superb conditions for the Frome & DMCC
organised meeting at the demanding Asham Woods track.

David Cowan
had excellent pace to take second place
in race one
|
Leading a star studded list of Irish riders, David
Wray continued from a strong first round to take
the fastest qualifying lap with Holmes second and
David Cowan third, both within a second of the fastest
time. Race one roared into life as 31 quads all
charged to take the best line into the first sharp
left hand corner. “I really wanted a good
start, put a fresh set of tyres on and timed it
just right” explained Holmes who took the
holeshot and immediately began to pull ahead.
A number of riders had become tangled on the first
corner, most notably Carl Bunce and George Callaway
who were then forced to set off from the very back.
Meanwhile, the huge crowds that had gathered to
watch the day’s racing were fixed on the battle
for second as Justin Reid, Cowan and Wray took centre
stage. “I wasn’t entirely comfortable
while I was running in second. The buckles on my
boot came off in lap three making it difficult to
change gear, I then ran wide.” commented Reid.
With Wray passing Cowan in lap six, he took advantage
of Reid’s mistake, only to have Cowan pass
them both as he powered his way up to second place.
Holmes took a comfortable win with a best ever
finish for second placed Cowan. Reid took third
ahead of Wray who faded in the last few laps.
Despite his initial problems, Bunce stormed through
to take an excellent fifth.
With the track watered, race two started with
a high-profile tangle on the first corner as Wray,
Holmes and Cowan were caught taking the tighter
angle. Running wide and taking a superb holeshot,
Reid led from his fellow team rider Dean Colhourn
and Quad Master Lindsey Duke. Unfortunately Reid
hit disaster in lap five as a problem with his
quad forced him to retire from the race. The action
was frantic as the lead changed from Colhourn
to Cowan (having finished lap one in 20th place)
and then to Luke Cooper.
“After Justin dropped out I had to pass
the battling Bunce and Callaway. I then kept my
distance from George and maintained it until the
flag.” Explained the clearly delighted 17
year old in his first British Championship win.
Yet another spectacular battle had been decided
with Callaway taking second ahead of Bunce while
Holmes had worked through to fourth, just ahead
of Oli Sansom in fifth.

Luke Cooper

Round 2
|
Cooper’s win put him as overall winner
in the Under 21 class, joint on points with Cowan
and Callaway taking third. With two strong races,
Duke took maximum points in the Quad Masters while
Darren Bridge just pipped Anthony Barrett to second
place. Joe Williams sealed his first Clubman victory
ahead of Michael Campbell and Anthony Canavan.
