Newry, Northern Ireland (6/27/2011) -
After the drama at Duns, this weekend the third
round of the Goldspeed ACU British Quad Championships
travels to the recently revamped Tinker Hill Motocross
Track in Newry, Northern Ireland. With all the action
taking place on Saturday 2nd July, organised by
Quad Racing Ireland, riders and spectators alike
will be looking forward to watching the next chapter
in what has so far been an exhilarating 2011 championship.
Round two was a tale of consistency and pace
in muddy conditions as current British Champion
Paul Winrow on board his Honda 450 showed his
winning instinct in race one, taking first place
from championship leader John Mitchell who stalled
on the penultimate lap.
Round two also saw a start to the championship
campaigns of Paul Holmes and Jason Macbeth, who
were unavailable for the opening round due to
european race commitments. Both riders quickly
made their presence known as Holmes took fastest
qualifying time, both holeshots and a well fought
second place finish in race two, while Macbeth
had a superb third and fourth finish to land second
overall.
The second of the two races saw an enthralling
battle between Paul Holmes, Mark Watson, John
Mitchell and Paul Winrow, all pulling away at
the front and battling hard. Having eventually
closed in on Holmes, it was KTM’s Mark Watson
who passed, followed by Mitchell who then took
the lead. Watson then suffered his second tumble
of the afternoon but incredibly was able to get
back on his quad, having only lost one place to
take third. Winrow meanwhile had come off and
couldn’t get started. ATV World Yamaha’s
John Mitchell went on to take the win followed
by a bruised Mark Watson in second overall and
Jason Macbeth in third.
Current 2011 ACU British Quadcross Championship
standings:
John Mitchell 97, David Wray 66, Giles Davis 61,
James Hellewell 59, Mark Watson 57
KTM’s James Hellewell continued his great
start in the under 21 category taking the overall
win ahead of Cain Rodgers and George Callaway.
In the ACU British Masters, an impressive Paul
Harkness took the overall win, while Darren Bridge
had two second place finishes just ahead on points
to Paul McConway who took the win in race two.
With no youth championships taking place, the
first race will start at 11am. Admission is £5
while under 12’s go free. The postcode for
Tinker Hill motocross track is BT34 1QJ. Further
information about the track can be found at www.quadracingireland.com.
