ACU Quadcross Paul Winrow Battles for Sixth at Dean Moor MX
Goldspeed ACU British Quad Championship - Round 4 - Dean Moor MX - July 24, 2011

With taking sixth in moto1 & tenth in moto 2 with cracked ribs Winrow for an impressive sixth place

Whitehaven, Cumbria (7/26/2011) - Sunday the 24th of July saw the 2011 GOLDSPEED ACU British Quad Championship move to Cumbria in the Northwest of England, the NETT Iveston & Satley Club hosting round four of the series at the picturesque but demanding Dean Moor Motocross Circuit near Whitehaven.

Travelling from his Birmingham base to the edge of the Lake District, Paul Winrow and the Winrow Racing team once again showed the drive and dedication that has helped him to a record unrivalled eleven British Championship titles, Winrow battling through two tough thirty minute motos with cracked ribs to take a 6-10 scorecard and tying for 6th overall on the day.

With glorious sunshine and clear skies overhead as the twenty-nine strong field took to the spectacular Dean Moor circuit for timed qualification, Winrow struggled initially to string together a good flying lap around the fast and flowing layout, posting 11th fastest time early in the session with less than three seconds separating the top fourteen riders.

As the action got underway for the first of the two twenty-five minute plus two-lap heats, Winrow got a superb start and on the run to the first corner slotted in to 2nd as the pack charged out in a cloud of dust. Circulating at a blistering pace in a five way tussle for the lead, Winrow resisted the numerous challenges and maintained position until the ten-minute mark when a slight error moved him back a slot, but determined to take back the position he mounted a further attack with half distance approaching only to be pushed over a berm as he made his move and dropping back to 6th. Feeling the effects of the cracked ribs sustained two-weeks earlier at the legendary European Quad Trophy 8 heures de Bastogne, Winrow was forced to ease his pace slightly as the race wore on, comfortably maintaining his hold on 6th to the checkered flag after sixteen hot and hectic laps.

A poor start by his standards to the closing moto of the day saw Winrow break the timing beam for the first time in 15th on the slick and muddy surface, track watering during the interval making visibility difficult from his mid-pack position. Taking a few laps to adapt to the conditions and increasing his tempo as the race developed, Winrow once again set about moving through the field, slotting in to 11th with half the sixteen lapper run but with a huge deficit to the rider in front, Winrow’s never say die attitude coming to the fore with a monumental effort to claim 10th at the two lap board and easily hold the position to the flag, his heroic performance promoting him to 10th overall in the series standings with three rounds remaining.

“It’s definitely not been the best of weekends and the results are not what I had hoped for” commented Winrow afterwards, “but in the circumstances and riding with cracked ribs it’s good to come away with some decent points. I struggled to get a good lap in practice which compromised my pick of gate, but in the first heat I got a great start and with the bike working brilliantly I was feeling really good until I got pushed over the berm and lost some positions, I tried to push to get back in touch but found it difficult to get a good rhythm and so settled for 6th. I got an awful start in race two, and with all the watering that had been done I just got filled in on the opening laps. It took me a little while to get in to the track and I was really feeling the pain at this stage, but I was able to make up a lot of positions and move in to the top ten at the flag. It’s been a tough weekend but I’ve managed to come away with moving up in the overall standings, and with the next round at the end of August in Langrish I’ll be fully recovered and will be focusing on getting on the podium.”
