Duns, Scotland (7/4/2011) - Saturday the 2nd of July saw Paul Winrow and the Winrow Racing Team travel across the Irish Sea to contest round three of the 2011 GOLDSPEED ACU British Quad Championship, Quad Racing Ireland promoting the event at the challenging Tinkerhill Motocross Circuit near Newry in County Down.

A greatly re-worked circuit from his last visit in 2007, the venue was to provide a tough test of character for the eleven times and current British Champion as he battled through a troublesome final moto to salvage some valuable points, Winrow’s efforts rewarded with 13th overall on the day after an outstanding opening moto 4th.

With glorious sunshine the order of the day and a large crowd in attendance, Winrow struggled slightly to get a clear lap around the sometimes congested 0.9 mile circuit, posting his fastest time on his first flying lap and securing 7th pick of gate for the two scheduled heats.

Paul Winrow took thirteenth overall moving him up to a top 10 position in the Goldspeed ACU British Quad Championship Points race

Getting fantastic drive off the line and slotting in to 2nd around the tight first corner, Winrow comfortably held position even as he fought to find his rhythm on the hardpack circuit in the early stages, a couple of mistakes in the opening phase of the race dropping him back to 4th as the race neared half distance. Under pressure for position but resisting the challenges as the track came to him, Winrow gradually pulled away from the ensuing pack as he pushed to catch the leading trio, but with time running out and a poor run of back markers in the closing stages was forced to settle for 4th, Winrow taking the checkered flag with a comfortable seven second margin after thirty action packed minutes.

Charging up the uphill start straight and heading out in 4th for the final twenty-five minute plus two-lap moto, Winrow once again gated well to complete the opening lap in 4th before moving up to 3rd on the next circuit. Adapting well to the circuit which had undergone some transformation since race one, Winrow pegged the gap to the duo in front as he fought for position but luck was to deal a killer blow, a puncture leaving Winrow with no option but to pit for a wheel change. Dropping to last position as he got underway, Winrow dug deep and should the qualities that have taken him to a record number of British titles, fighting to the end to get back in to the points with 20th at the flag.

“It’s definitely not been the result that I’ve been looking for or wanted” Winrow commented afterwards, “I’ve always enjoyed racing here in the past, but I’ve really struggled to find a good rhythm this weekend so I was happy enough with 4th in the first moto. There has been a lot of effort put in to improve the circuit from the last time we were here and you can see the amount of work that has been done and the improvements that have been made, but the clay that has been brought in has a lot of really sharp rock in it and unfortunately I picked up a puncture in the second race which effectively ended any chance I had of a good finish. I could feel the tyre going down and could possibly have continued without changing it, but I took the decision to take no chances and managed to salvage some points from the race. It’s been a difficult weekend but that’s racing and there are still a lot of points up for grabs, so I’ll put this one behind me and re-focus on Dean Moor on the 24th of July for the next round”.
