Duns, Scotland (6/14/2011) - Current
British Champion, Paul Winrow, took his first race
win of the 2011 GOLDSPEED ACU British Quad Championship
at the weekend, winning the opening moto as the
series moved north to Scotland for round two of
the seven scheduled rounds.
Hosted by Quad Racing Scotland on Sunday the
12th of June at the picturesque Duns Motocross
Circuit nestled in the Lammermuir Hills in the
Scottish Borders, the technical and demanding
hardpack circuit was made all the more difficult
for the riders on race day, heavy rain in the
run up to the meeting leaving soft sticky patches
around the circuit with the surface roughing up
more than usual.

Struggling to get a clear track for a flying
lap in the early morning’s timed qualification
session, Winrow nevertheless secured an all important
front row gate for the uphill start with 10th
fastest time of the twenty-nine strong field.
After a slight delay while the QRS crew and circuit
owners worked diligently to re-grade and redress
as much of the one and a quarter mile circuit
as time and weather constraints would allow, the
first of the two planned heats got underway with
Winrow getting a great run to the first corner
and slotting in to 4th. Gauging the surface conditions
in the early laps and increasing pace as the track
came to him, Winrow began to make his way towards
the front and with four laps gone had moved up
to 3rd, before slotting in to 2nd at half distance.
Pegging the gap to the leader but unable to push
at full speed with the effects of a loose ball-joint
hampering his progress, Winrow’s pace was
enough to ensure he had opened up a seven second
advantage over the ensuing pack as he chased down
the leader, his relentless pursuit rewarded with
two laps to go when he seized the opportunity
to take the lead, Winrow taking the chequered
flag after thirteen laps with a sizeable twelve
second winning margin.

Unfortunatly
Winrow wrecked in Race two and was unable
regain a position to give him a podium
positon overall

Gating 3rd as they charged out for the final twenty-five
minute plus two-lap moto, Winrow once again set
about getting to the front, moving up to 2nd with
five minutes run before a mistake at one-third distance
left him circulating 4th. Re-grouping and gradually
reducing the six second deficit to 3rd place to
just two seconds with two laps to go, Winrow was
forced of the racing line on the approach to a sharp
downhill corner in order to pass a back marker,
a severe braking bump on the approach unsettling
his quad and taking a slow speed spill mid corner.
Quickly remounting his quad with seconds ticking
away, Winrow was unable to fire the motor into life
straight away, working furiously trackside but losing
positions as he struggled to get underway, Winrow
dropping to 24th with time against him and unable
to improve on his position at the flag.
After a bittersweet day at the office, Winrow
commented “ it’s been a frustrating
end to the day after taking the win in the opening
heat, and at this stage I’m more disappointed
at the bike not starting straight away than anything
else. The circuit owners have done a superb job
in getting the track prepared in such difficult
conditions, and although it was a bit one lined
in practice and the first race it was a lot of
fun to ride. In the first race I felt really strong
and had good pace until the ball joint came loose,
but I kept plugging away applying pressure and
it paid of with the win. In the second race I
got a great start but struggled to find a good
rhythm in the middle phase of the race, but once
I got back in to it I was able to close in on
3rd but it wasn’t meant to be. The back
marker was on the racing line so I had to go around
the outside, and when I hit the braking bump it
was one of those low speed spills where the bike
pitched just far enough to roll over so didn’t
cause any visible damage, but for some strange
reason it wouldn’t fire up straight away,
a problem that I’ve never had before. It
was as if something had blocked the fuel supply
temporarily as when I moved the bike to the side
of the track out of the way it fired up straight
away. It’s not been the overall result I’d
hoped for, but there are still five rounds remaining
and a lot of racing still to do”.
