Baltimore, MD (9/2/2013) - Each season the Grand National Cross Country Series takes a summer break. This year we were given two sun shining months to enjoy away from the racetrack. Although many racers spend their summers visiting local series or other nationals, sometimes the top guys find other things to fill their time.  And after talking with the five fastest guys in GNCC racing, we learned that the activities they fill their time with vary more than the brands of quads they race.

The champ has been filling his Instagram account with pictures that depict his summer, and most are captioned with #standupnation or #trekbikes. Chris Borich mixed up his training regimen this summer by adding stand up jet skis, biking and dual sporting.

“We’ve been doing a lot of jet skiing. I go as much as I can; I usually go with Andrew DeLong (pro-am dirt biker), the McCormicks (owners of Ye Old Cycle Barn), Johnny (Gallagher) or Chris Bach (pro dirt biker). It’s great for the summer weather and definitely helps keep me in shape,” said Borich who enjoys laying down the water motos on the Susquehanna River.

Borich has also been holding KLX 100 battles at his house; he and his buddies, Handy and Steve, race around his home track on little Kawasaki dirt bikes. They have a podium celebration and everything after the checkers. Not surprisingly, Borich is the reigning champion at that event.

Cycling, stand up jet skis and shop work describe Walker Fowler’s summer break.  He even added two new machines to his go fast fleet, two stand up jet skis that he describes as ‘junkers that float.’ Between the laps on the lake and miles on his road bike Fowler’s past times fit right into his workout routine.

“I have been getting more and more into cycling. It’s such a good workout and really a lot of fun,” regarded Fowler about his new pastime.

Aside from hot laps on the water and miles on his bike, Fowler also had the chance to fly to California and try out the new 2014 Yamaha YFZ 450R ATV Models.  “I’d never ridden west of Texas and I was super stoked to try out the new Yamahas. I rode with Chad Wienen, Thomas Brown and Dustin Nelson; we had a great time ripping up the west coast terrain and showing off the new Yamahas,” said Fowler.

Chris Bithell - GNCC XC1 Pro ATV Racer
Chris Bithell's creative way of using his tractor to move around his race quad

Summer time at the Bithell residence was unlike any other summer on record for the 25-year-old racer. This year Chris Bithell not only had to focus on building, tearing-down and prepping his ever growing Suzuki collection, but he also now has a 100 acre farm to take care of.

Bithell bought the sprawling acreage in January and has been working to prefect the property ever since. This summer brought many hours on the tractor for the Pennsylvanian.

“I’ve always loved working outside and this year I have really gotten to spend any extra time I have tending to the farm. We did several wagons of hay and there is around 60 acres of corn planted. I’ve had a lot of help, but spent plenty of hours on the tractor. Aside from that, we’ve been working on the barn and getting a shop ready for all of my quads. It’s been different, we didn’t spend nearly any time just relaxing, but it’s definitely worth it,” regarded Bithell.

As the season winds to the final rounds Bithell hopes to get his #4 Maxxis backed Suzuki out front and claim his first win on the new machine. Bithell has had a lot of success this season as a privateer and plans to continue that streak into the final four rounds.
