Bakersfield, CA (5/2/2018)
- H&M Motorsports’ David Haagsma finished
third in the Pro SXS portion of the WORCS
Series race at Sand Hollow State Park in Hurricane,
UT. Haagsma’s third consecutive podium puts
him 12 points ahead in the title chase with
just five races left in the season.
Sand Hollow’s course was significantly modified
this year to allow for more passing opportunities.
The course featured a wide array of terrain,
from wide open sand, to deep whoops, sharp
rocks and even asphalt sections. The changes
handed many different line choices to the
competitors.
“The Sparks engine and Maxxis tires got me
off to a great start,” said Haagsma. “I had
some good battles, and the car worked great.
I just didn’t have the confidence in the rocks
and the big whoops. The course was really
fast and technical. It was pretty gnarly and
one of the best battles in a while. I always
like coming here. I just made some bad line
choices.”
With high winds during the race, visibility
became an issue on several sections of the
track. Haagsma was pleased that he had Maxxis
tires with Tire Blocks on his Polaris, especially
in the rocks.
“There were sharp rocks everywhere and they’re
hard to avoid in the dust, but I had the confidence
my tires would hold up and they did,” said
Haagsma. “The car just rips. We just put a
tuner and an exhaust from Sparks and it’s
faster than any other car out there. It was
fun and competitive and the car worked great.”
Haagsma is now well on his way to a third
WORCS championship. The 12-point gap is key
because wins count for 25 points, while consistency
usually wins out. He will next head to Cedar
City, UT and Iron Mine Race Park for the next
race. That race is scheduled for May 25-27.
