Bakersfield, CA (3/1/2018)
- H&M Motorsports’ David Haagsma dominated
the race and just missed the win, finishing
second in his 51FIFTY Polaris RZR Turbo in
the WORCS Pro SXS race. The second round of
WORCS competition was held at Canyon MX in
Peoria, AZ.
The track comprised Canyon’s motocross course,
which features step-ups, tabletops and several
doubles and triples. That was combined with
the rocky desert around the track.
Haagsma was happy to be at a more traditional
off-road venue and it showed thanks to Sparks
Racing’s Brandon Hong clutch tuning, he launched
off the starting line and grabbed the holeshot.
Haagsma had the car to beat and was running
hard in the lead for most of the race. A glitch
in the engine management slowed him slightly
on the final lap, and he finished second.
“I felt great all day,” said Haagsma. “I
got a great jump on everyone and got the holeshot
pretty easily. I led 99 percent of the race,
but I had an issue with the check engine light
on the last lap and lost some power. With
the mechanical, I’ll take second. We’ll figure
it out and we’ll be ready for the next round.”
Despite the heartbreak at the end of the
race, Haagsma is extremely upbeat. The Polaris
RZR Turbo ran excellent and was super fast.
“I felt really confident out there, the car
was running great, and I think we’ll have
a good year,” said Haagsma. “The car is more
developed this year. Everything about the
car is better. You get into a little trouble
and you just throttle out of it.”
The off-road section featured rounded rocks
that confounded many racers in the field.
Haagsma’s tire setup with Maxxis Tires, Tire
Blocks and Method Wheels helped him navigate
the rocky sections with ease.
“With Maxxis Tires, Tire Blocks and Method
Wheels I didn’t really have to worry about
the rocks,” said Haagsma. “I could just smash
them and not worry about the tires. I saw
a guy out there with two flat tires and broken
wheels. That’s no way to finish.”
Haagsma is now well on his way to a third
WORCS championship and will look for a dominant
run at the next race, being held in Lake Havasu
City, AZ, March 16-18.
